The experts featured in the “Weekly Review” segment, Areg Kochinyan and Farkhad Mammadov, agree that the crisis surrounding Iran increases risks for the South Caucasus – in terms of security, the economy and logistics – while at the same time encouraging Armenia and Azerbaijan to move cautiously closer in order to avoid being drawn into the conflict and to preserve stability. Contacts and coordination are already taking place at the diplomatic level, along with a shared interest in developing alternative transport routes through each other’s territories. However, the overall impact will depend on additional factors, most notably the elections in Armenia, the positions of external actors and the duration of the Iranian crisis itself.
