Gaspar Sargsian |
The
Chairman of Armenian Democratic Party.
Aram
Sargsian was born in 1949, in Yerevan, is a professional journalist. In 1966,
having graduated from the secondary school, was employed as lawyer.
In 1972 he
graduated from the Institute of Russian and Foreign Languages named after
Brusov. Along with his studies, he worked as a correspondent for the factory
newspaper, was the secretary of the organization of Young Communists of Yerevan
Tyre Plant, later - the correspondent of the Republican "Komsomolets"
newspaper.
In
1972-1974 he continued his studied in Moscow, receiving also professional
journalistic education.
In 1974 he
worked as a correspondent of "Komsomolskaya Pravda" daily in Moscow.
In 1976 he
was invited to work as a head of department of the Central Committee of Union of
Young Communists of Armenia, and in 1978 he was appointed to the position of
instructor at the party organization department of the Central Committee of CPA.
Upon the
invitation of "Komsomolskaya Pravda" newspaper Aram Sargsian resumed
professional activities, working as the correspondent of this daily in Armenia
for about 10 years, and since 1989 he became the correspondent of
"Pravda" daily in Armenia.
In 1990 he
was elected to be the secretary of the Central Committee of CPA, and in June,
1991- the First Secretary.
In
September 1991 the Democratic Party of Armenia was established, which chose its
ideology to be the theory of democratic socialism. The Founding Meeting of the DPA elected Aram Sargsian its
chairman.
In 1996
Aram Sargsian, jointly with the leaders of a number of opposition parties formed
"National Consensus" Alliance, was registered as a candidate for RA
presidency, and during the first
stage defended the candidate of the Alliance.
Considering
the Artsakh issue to be a national liberation struggle, in 1996 Aram Sargsian
headed the organizational committee "To Protect MKR".
Since May
1, 1998 he was the Foreign Policy Councilor of the RA President. In June 1999 he
resigned this position.
The
Chairman of the Democratic Party of Armenia has a reputation of a firm and
candid, politically mature politician.
Aram Sargsian is married, has three children.
